Scouts: Ages 10½ – 14 years

A Scout Troop was the original section of The Scout Association set up when Scouting began in 1907. It is the eldest section in your local group and is open to boys and girls.

The Scout Leader will place your young person in a small group called a Patrol. There will be several different Patrols within the Troop which will vary in size. Each Patrol will have an older member who is called a Patrol Leader who will help them settle in and guide development.

A scout will spend approximately 3½ years in the Troop. Scouts will challenge their ability to work as a team, expand their skills already developed, encouraging them to undertake new adventures and tasks. They will participate in a wide selection of activities from the nine areas of the challenge programme, adventure, outdoors, creativity, expedition, skills, our world, teamwork and leadership.

They will get the opportunity to attend Nights Away events spending some time under canvas or maybe on a canal boat, sailing ship or even on a skiing trip. This will develop their independence, encouraging them to be more self reliant. They may even get the chance to attend a National or International event.

On joining the scout section they will soon discover the many exciting programmes that are on offer for their age group obtaining many badges, which are appropriate to their own areas of interest. The challenge and activity badges they earn are proudly displayed on their uniform, leading ultimately to The Chief Scouts Gold Award

Chief Scouts Gold Award

When they are 13 ½ the troop leader will prepare them to leave the scout section. They will have the opportunity to join a District Explorer Unit where they will meet with other young people who wish to continue their journey in scouting. They may decide they would like to start expanding their Leadership skills and take on the role of a Young Leader with a younger section.
The times for our troops vary according to where they meet.
