Explorer Scouts Hillwalking Weekend – Berwyn Mountains, Snowdonia, 20 - 23 October 2017
Following the success of hillwalking and mountaineering trips in previous years, I am pleased to be able to confirm the details for this year’s trip at the start of October half term. We will be going to the Berywn Mountains, which are a lesser-trod part of Snowdonia in North Wales. Travel will be by minibus on Friday night, probably leaving at about 6pm on Friday 20 October, and we will aim to be back by about 7/8pm (subject to traffic on the motorways) on Monday 23 October.
We will be staying at Yr Hen Felin Cynwyd, a Scout centre perfectly located for access to the main peaks of the area and also to waterfalls and other local attractions. On the Saturday, we intend to spend the day out walking; there will be a range of hill and valley walks to suit all abilities, including a low level walks for those who want it. On the Sunday we plan to spend the morning climbing on local crags and then in the afternoon we are booked to go white water rafting on the River Dee at Llangollen, which promises to be awesome! On the Monday we will have a competition using handheld GPS units before heading home, and there will be the usual mix of chill-out time and quiz/film etc evenings over the weekend, too. All hill activities will be organised and led by adults holding the appropriate Scout Association Adventurous Activity Permits and/or professional qualifications (e.g. Mountain Leader Award, Single Pitch Award etc), and the white water rafting will be through a professional provider.
This weekend will cost £70 per Explorer Scout, which includes all transport, activities and equipment hire, accommodation and food (Saturday breakfast to Monday lunch). We have a grant of £750 from the Jack Petchey Foundation this year to subsidise the cost of the white water rafting (which at commercial rates would be £50 per person on its own) and we are very grateful to them for their support with this activity.
If you would like to come to the Berwyn Mountains with us then please complete the tear-off slip below and return it to your Explorer Scout Leader with a cheque for £70 made payable to “Sutton District Explorer Scouts” by no later than your Unit meeting in the week commencing Monday 18 September). I must confirm final numbers and pay for the white water rafting that weekend, so will not be able to guarantee any late bookings a space on that activity. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first-come-first-served basis, so please book yours as quickly as you can if you would like to attend.
More details will be sent via leaders to those who book spaces but, if you have any queries about this trip, please email me at email@example.com and I will do my best to answer them!
Yours in Scouting
District Explorer Scout Commissioner
